Home Building Professionals

What you need to get started building green.

Without home building professionals, there are no green-built homes.

NAHB members build more than 80 percent of the homes in this country and it is estimated that half of those incorporate at least some green practices into their development, design, and construction. A recent McGraw-Hill study predicts that the green building marketplace is expected to be worth nearly $60 billion by 2010. How do builders, designers, and other professionals get involved?

The best place to start is with your local green building program. Many local associations offer green building education and networking events, guides, help lines, green resources directories, and other tools and marketing opportunities. Local associations may also have customized, climate-specific guidelines, so it is important to become familiar with the programs in place in your area.

If there is not yet a program in your project area, try contacting your state or local home builders association to find out what initiatives may be underway. Or, get involved with developing a local green building program. Not only will you gain a fuller understanding of the needs and considerations to run a successful program, but involvement also gives you the opportunity to help shape the future of green building in your community.
